Senior Euro Games edizione 2020

EURO SENIOR GAMES 2018-2020

EURO SENIOR GAMES 2018-2020

Senior Euro Games,  a European Project developed by  Lunga Vita Attiva (Italy ). Age & Opportunity (Ireland) and OKRA Sport (Belgium), supported by the Erasmus Plus Sport Program, to promote an increased participation of seniors in physical activities. The project started on January 1st 2019 and is now at its conclusion.

During the two years of work partners shared programs and activities, they have learned from each other, developed new approaches in networking and mainstreaming results.

It has been interesting to note cultural differences and how these influence behaviors and the work of organizations. In Ireland and Belgium, for example,  participants are not obliged to have a medical certification to take part in a program: each person is responsible for their health and can evaluate if they can take part in the physical activity proposed.

In the course of the project  Okra Sport, Age and Opportunity e Lunga Vita Attiva have revisited traditional games to  adapt them to senior needs and design new activities. In preparation  of the final Euro Games Festival, each country presented more games to the partnership: at the end one game was selected per country: Irish Skidils, Belgian Cross Boccia and Italian Slow Swimming.

Skidils is played with two big skittles that are placed in front of each other at a distance of about 9m. During the game two teams play and try to knock down the skidil. The winning team is the one who scores better within the given time.

Cross boccia is similar to bowls with the difference that the bowl is a round packet filled with seeds so that the boccia don’t run away and can easily be played in any location and with different types of draws.

Slow Swimming for Resilance 2000 is a sort of relay where the baton is represented by a pool tablet with a letter printed on top: each swimmer passes the tablet to the next swimmer until all tablets are passed and the message is completed.

The three games should have been played during the Euro Games Festival scheduled for April 2020 and played simultaneously in the three countries.

But then Covid 19 broke out and everthing was postponed ….
